Overview

Methodox Wallpaper Generator generates images suitable for wallpapers from scratch. There are no images inside the program. Each generator is a piece of code that draws a scene from a width, a height, a seed and a handful of settings — so when you ask for 8K it paints 8K, rather than enlarging something smaller.

Originally conceived for Methodox games - we are releasing it for its standalone utility.

Please note that only Windows version is available right now!

Features

  • Built-in generators
  • Custom output resolution: up to 4K (depending on generator)
  • Randomized (depending on generator)

Generators

Five generators

  • City Skyline — a downtown cluster of towers after dark, lit windows in seven colour temperatures, and a lake that gives most of it back. Night, moonlit, twilight or blue hour; water, rooftops, or nothing at all.
  • Aurora Tundra — curtains hanging over an arctic valley, with a frozen river carrying the sky's colour down between the snow ridges.
  • Floating Isles — islands over a layered cloud sea, waterfalls pouring off their undersides into nothing, birds working the updraft.
  • Crystal Cavern — a drowned chamber of polygonal crystal, lit from an opening you never see and doubled in the pool below.
  • Wild Dunes — a wind-carved dune field, ray-cast with real cast shadows, so the light on the crests is the light the geometry actually gets.

Each one gives you five to seven controls.

Output sizes

Common sizes: 360p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 8K, plus a 21:9 ultrawide at 3440 x 1440 and a phone portrait at 1170 x 2532.

The available sizes depend on the generator. The four stylised environments work inside palettes of 18 to 25 colours and put their gradients into an ordered dither — that crosshatch is what makes them read as pixel art at wallpaper size instead of as a photograph someone shrank, and past 4K it stops being texture and turns into noise. So they cap at 4K, and the sizes above it stay in the row with a padlock.

City Skyline carries no fixed-size texture, so it runs the whole ladder to 8K.

A size that is not 16:9 is previewed at its own shape, letterboxed rather than  stretched. A phone wallpaper really is a tall picture.

Version history

  • v0.1 — first release. Five generators, eight output sizes, seeds written into file names.

Really good! Will try this out soon for backgrounds. Next things on my wish list for this tool might be: More types of environments/generators, more configurations, color options for each generator, ability to create multiple layers with transparency for parallax, ability to create and load your own presets, ability to create vertical or horizontally tiling images for infinitely scrolling backgrounds/animations, potential animation for certain layers (animated wallpapers or backgrounds).

Hey Neddy, thanks for your support and great suggestions! We will see how we can refine the workflow and add more features as we go! I especially like the animated layer idea🤔
